Alankuda Beach Cleanup

Help us turn local beach cleanups into a year-round effort to protect 6.5 km of Sri Lanka's coastline.

A Local Conservation Initiative

A beautiful, almost deserted coastline. A nesting place for sea turtles. And a growing problem with ocean plastic.

At Dune Towers, we already organise and finance beach cleanups in Alankuda, on Sri Lanka's northwest coast. Now we want to turn occasional cleanups into a permanent programme benefiting the entire local coastline.

The Challenge

Plastic doesn't disappear when the waves retreat.

Alankuda is a beautiful, largely deserted beach on Sri Lanka's northwest coast. Sea turtles come ashore here to lay their eggs. But ocean currents also bring plastic bottles, packaging, fishing debris and other waste to this coastline.

Much of this plastic gets trapped in sandy hollows beyond the waterline, where it can remain long after the waves have retreated.

Other cleanup programmes mainly focus on the shoreline. Our project aims to care for the neglected areas further inland, where rubbish continues to accumulate.

Protecting a sea turtle nesting habitat

Removing plastic while taking care not to disturb wildlife and nests is one practical way we can help protect this coastal environment.

6.5 kilometres of coastline. Our ambition is to extend regular beach cleaning beyond the small area we already maintain.

Our next step: expand this work from a small section of beach to a permanent cleanup programme covering as much of the 6.5 km coastline as funding allows.

Our Track Record

We have already started.

We don't want to wait for someone else to solve the problem. For years, Dune Towers has organised and paid for regular beach cleanups.

Our local team currently looks after approximately 200 metres of coastline near the resort. During a major cleanup, four workers can collect around 40 large bags of plastic in a single day.

These photographs show our real team, the plastic collected and the transport required to remove it from the beach.

Our Mission

From occasional cleanups to year-round care.

Plastic keeps arriving throughout the year. That's why a single large cleanup is not enough.

We are building a long-term programme with two locally employed beach cleaners, working six days a week when fully funded.

We will focus particularly on the areas beyond the waterline that are not regularly covered by existing cleanup programmes.

The scale of the work will grow with the funding available, and additional workers can be engaged when unusually large amounts of waste arrive.

What your support will make possible

  • Regular plastic collection along the coastline
  • Stable, fairly paid employment for local people
  • Careful protection of turtle nesting areas
  • Tools, collection bags and waste transport
  • Development of responsible waste processing
  • Regular public updates and transparent reporting

This is our planned programme. Its coverage and intensity will depend on the financial support received.

Support the Project

Help us keep Alankuda Beach clean, month after month.

Our goal is to raise €600 per month to support permanent local beach cleaning.

Your contribution helps fund local workers, collection tools, waste transport and the development of responsible waste handling.

Monthly donations make the biggest difference. They allow us to plan regular work rather than relying on occasional cleanup events.

Choose a one-time or monthly donation. Secure payments are handled by WhyDonate.

Accountability & Partnerships

Real work. Transparent reporting.

The project is locally organised by the Dune Towers team through Blue Whale Lodge Lanka (PVT) LTD. Donations collected for the beach cleanup will be used for the stated environmental activities, not unrelated resort operations.

Our commitment to transparency

  • Photographs and updates from actual cleanups
  • Reporting of collected waste and work completed
  • Information on expenditure and project progress
  • Clear reporting of how collected waste is handled

Our regular reporting programme will develop as permanent operations begin.

Become a project partner

We welcome companies, environmental organisations, recycling operators and supporters interested in helping us build a long-term solution.

We are particularly interested in partnerships for responsible plastic processing, logistics and stable financing of local cleanup work.

We are actively seeking qualified recycling and waste-management partners. Until these arrangements are verified, we will not claim that all collected plastic is recycled.
