Dambulla

Dambulla is home to the famous Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most impressive temple complexes in Sri Lanka. The temple is located on a rock that rises 160 meters above the surrounding landscape, and it’s made up of five different caves that are filled with ancient statues, paintings, and other treasures.

The third cave, known as the Great New Monastery, is the largest and most impressive of the five caves, with 48 Buddha statues and a stunning mural of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.

After visiting the cave temple, you can explore the town of Dambulla itself. The town is small but charming, with plenty of shops selling souvenirs, handicrafts, and other local products. There are also several restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy a meal or a cup of tea.
